RPL Tools for BSB41415

I wasn’t going to develop RPL tools for the Certificate IV level units because I didn’t think there was much demand. Naturally, as soon as I made this decision I started to receive requests for RPL tools for the Cert IV in WHS. Typical!

So, now I have completed these in the same format that I used for the BSB51915 Diploma of leadership and management RPL tools – namely:
• One assessor guide and candidate guide for the qualification as a whole – to start the process. This contains the candidate application and guidance for both the assessor and candidate on the RPL process.
• One assessor guide and candidate guide for each unit of competency.

I have put full samples on my web site (at the bottom of the BSB41415 page).

There are two more RPL tools to develop for BSB41415. They are BSBWHS408 and BSBWHS409. I should have these finished in the next couple of days. These units will be RPL tools only – no learning and assessment resources.

These two units must be assessed in the workplace and need to be highly contextualised to the workplace. Monitoring processes and contractor management depend on the type of workplace. For instance, a laboratory, construction site, manufacturing, mining, power generation require quite different air monitoring and contractor management.

Next project: RPL tools for BSB42015 Certificate IV in leadership and management.

RPL Tools for BSB51915

Following on from my last blog, I’ve now completed all the RPL tools for BSB51915 Diploma of leadership and management.

The units done are:
1. BSBLDR501 Develop and use emotional intelligence
2. BSBMGT517 Manage operational plan
3. BSBLDR502 Lead and manage effective workplace relationships
4. BSBWOR502 Lead and manage team effectiveness
5. BSBCUS501 Manage quality customer service
6. BSBHRM405 Support the recruitment, selection and induction staff
7. BSBLDR503 Communicate with influence
8. BSBMGT502 Manage people performance
9. BSBMGT516 Facilitate continuous improvement
10. BSBPMG522 Undertake project work
11. BSBRSK501 Manage risk
12. BSBWHS501 Ensure a safe workplace
13. BSBWOR501 Manage personal work priorities and professional development
14. BSBADM502 Manage meetings

There’s a preliminary RPL Assessor Guide and Candidate Guide and Application that applies to the qualification as a whole.

Then there are separate RPL Assessor Guides and Candidate Guides for each unit.

The charge for these is $125 plus GST per unit. There are now samples on the BSB51915 web page, at the bottom of the page.

BSB 51915 RPL Tools Development

Yay!

I’ve finally been able to start on RPL tools.

Had to get on with this because one of my clients needs two of them for audit rectification. The learning and assessment tools were OK but the auditor required RPL tools as well. Now they are both done and I can breathe again.

It’s a complete re-think from the way I formatted the tools before. There’s a preliminary Candidate Guide and Application for the qualification as a whole. This includes the explanation of the RPL process and what the candidate needs to do. There’s a “sister” RPL Assessor Guide for the qualification as a whole that is very detailed. It’s where the assessor and candidate decide on the electives, after the assessor receives the candidate’s application and CV.

Then there will be a separate Candidate Guide and Assessor Guide per unit. An RTO can put these together if they choose, or keep them as individual documents. Having done many RPLs myself, I know how complex the process can be – particularly for the assessor mapping all the evidence. So I’ve created lists of suggested documentary evidence and pre-mapped for the assessor. In the same way, the third party verification forms and competency conversation are internally mapped.

Bear with me. I’ve only completed 2 units so far in BSB51915 Diploma of Leadership and Management. Now I have to do all the rest for all the qualifications.

Back to the grindstone …

BSBWOR404 Develop Work Priorities

I mentioned in my last blog that this unit was the next cab off the rank and I’ve just completed the resources for this unit.

It’s a Group A unit, and you must have a minimum of 4 from Group A in BSB42015 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management. Now my clients have a choice. Some of them don’t want to use TAEDEL404 Mentor in the workplace so that’s why this unit needed to be developed.
Now I need to start on the RPL tools for all of the units. I’ll be starting with the RPL tools for BSB51915 Diploma of leadership and management.

They will be slightly different from the way I’ve developed them in the past. I plan to put the application form as a separate document, rather than include it in each unit.
Also, practical activities are optional in RPL, and because of the way I’ve mapped the assessments in the learning and assessment pathway, any gaps that the assessor identifies can be filled by selecting assessments from them.

This will speed up development greatly and I’m hoping to do one per day (cross fingers).

On the home front, I’m about to call builders and organise to renovate the bathrooms. One at a time of course. I may work alone but I still need to shower!

BSBLDR503 Communicate with influence

I have had quite a few requests to develop this unit and I’ve just finished it. This one was really challenging. I discussed it with my wonderful colleagues before jumping into it, because honestly, you could interpret the unit in various ways.
I’ve also written to Steven Deer at IBSA to point out a couple of mistakes in the unit.

It won’t change what I’ve written but when the next version is released Steven says he will fix them.

The mistakes:
“PC 3.5 Outcomes of meetings are promptly summarised for action and distributed to stakeholders, as required”
It’s written in the passive tense and will be changed to active.

KE: “demonstrate principles of cross-cultural communication”
The word “demonstrate” is out of place in knowledge evidence. These days they are using “outline”, “explain” etc.

Anyway, I’ve made sure that the resource requires the candidate to not only explain but also demonstrate cross-cultural communication so it should be OK.

BSBWOR404 Develop work priorities
This is the next resource that I will be developing in response to demand from existing clients.

Continuing with nose to the grindstone …

3 Qualifications Completed

PHEW!
It’s been full on since March but I now have resources for all three of the qualifications I was working on.

They were developed in this order:
1. BSB51915 Diploma of Leadership and Management
2. BSB42015 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management
3. BSB41415 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety

There’s a complete list of all units developed, in order of code, on this website as a separate document that can be downloaded and easily printed.
BSB42015 Cert IV Leadership and Management and BSB41415 Cert IV WHS have quite a few overlaps in the electives. There’s even an overlap with the Diploma, since BSBPMG522 Undertake project work is common to all three qualifications.

The work is not over yet. In response to requests from existing clients I will be developing resources for:
· BSBLDR503 Communicate with influence; and
· BSBWOR404 Develop work priorities

Because of the rush, I haven’t developed RPL tools so I will also be going back and developing RPL tools for each of the units.

Those of you who have been following my comments and those of Chemene on Linkedln will know that TAE40110 new qualification is still not endorsed. It was supposed to go to AISC September meeting but didn’t. There is an October and December meeting but Robert Bluer at IBSA doesn’t seem confident about whether it will be endorsed at all this year.

As a result, those of us who develop TAE resources don’t quite know what to do. Chemene Sinson (Blackwater Projects) is holding fire apart from TAELLN411 which is already endorsed. I have already developed TAELLN411 but am not actively marketing it, except to make it available to my existing clients. (You will notice it’s not on the list of units developed.)

The last few months have severely reduced the time I could devote to actual training and hopefully I can spend a bit more time with “real people” now that the worst of the development is done. However, this may be a vain hope as I can see TAE rearing its ugly head soon.

BSB41415 Extras in Progress

Development of the resources for BSB41415 Cert IV Work Health and Safety is going quite well I think.

I have completed enough units to meet the packaging rules but have more to go. Units completed are:
Core Units
1. BSBWHS402 Assist with compliance with WHS laws
2. BSBWHS403 Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS consultation and participation processes
3. BSBWHS404 Contribute to WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control
4. BSBWHS405 Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS management systems
5. BSBWHS406 Assist with responding to incidents

Elective Units
Group A
6. BSBPMG522 Undertake project work (done as part of BSB51915 Diploma of leadership and management)
7. BSBSUS301 Implement and monitor environmentally sustainable work practices (done as part of BSB42015 Cert IV leadership and management)
8. BSBWHS410 Contribute to work-related health and safety measures and initiatives

Group B
9. BSBMGT401 Show leadership in the workplace (done as part of BSB42015 Cert IV leadership and management)
10. BSBMGT403 Implement continuous improvement (done as part of BSB42015 Cert IV leadership and management)

So this meets the packaging rules.

I am now going to develop:
· BSBCMM401 Make a presentation
· BSBRES401 Analyse and present research information

These are both Group A units, so it gives more choice. They are also units that are in the electives for BSB42015 Cert IV leadership and management.

I have been asked to develop BSBLDR503 Communicate with influence which is a Group A unit in BSB51915 Diploma of leadership and management, so I should be starting that quite soon. (I wonder whether it’s a unit that every politician should have.)

Progress in BSB41415 Cert IV WHS

This is just a quick note regarding my progress on developing the units for BSB41415 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety.

I have now completed the resources for all 5 core units:
· BSBWHS402 Assist with compliance with WHS laws
· BSBWHS403 Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS consultation and participation processes
· BSBWHS404 Contribute to WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control
· BSBWHS405 Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS management systems
· BSBWHS406 Assist with responding to incidents

My original hope was to have all 10 resources completed before the end of August but I don’t think this will happen, as I am going on a “health retreat” for 5 days next week. Don’t know what persuaded me to do this … actually I do. It was a combination of my best friend and my doctor. Wish me luck. It will be 5 days without alcohol, cigarettes, coffee or even cooked food. Why on earth would I pay for such suffering?

Anyway, back to the resources. Those of you who are my current clients know that I had already developed BSB41412 units and the BSB41415 units are all stated as equivalent.
This is why I left these till last, as I figured my existing clients could just re-map.

In fact, I have made modifications — not just re-mapped. Every time I look at something I developed previously I find ways to make it better. Also, the new training package format did require some tweaking of the assessments — but not nearly as much as BSB42015 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management or BSB51915 Diploma of Leadership and Management.

I might be able to get one more unit done before I go away next week. (I would cross my fingers but that makes it very difficult to type.)

The Complete BSB42015

I’m happy to say that I have now completed the resources for BSB42015 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management. Not before time, as I have clients waiting for them. Some couldn’t wait and have been purchasing the units one by one as soon as they are developed.

The qualification BSB42015 is the successor to BSB40812 Certificate IV in Frontline Management, but is not equivalent. Nevertheless, several of the units were equivalent and I had already developed resources for the FLM qualification — much the same way that I already had Diploma of Management resources that I could use as the basis for the Diploma of Leadership and Management.

Having said that, there was more to change in the Cert IV than there was in the Diploma —which is why it took me so long. As I’ve mentioned before, the new format replaces Required Knowledge with Knowledge Evidence and the change in the wording often requires further assessment tasks.

Example from BSBMGT401 Show leadership in the workplace:
· explain how to identify an organisation’s standards and values when they are:
o stated
o implied

This was implied in the performance criteria for BSBMGT401A but not stated as Required Knowledge. In this case it was insufficient for the candidate to have applied the organisation’s standards and values as demonstrated in performance of a task. They also have to explain how they identified the stated and implied values.

So altogether this development project has been challenging and I’m relieved to be moving on. Now I’m starting on BSB41415 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety. This is the qualification most in demand by my clients, but I also considered it was the one that would need the least work to modify. Hopefully that’s correct. I’m aiming to have the Cert IV WHS resources all complete by the end of August.

With regard to the new TAE Cert IV, the latest word is that it will be out in September. That will suit my timing quite well but I’m not holding my breath. We have been expecting this qualification for over a year now.

BSB51915 Proving Popular

My resources for BSB51915 Diploma of leadership and management are proving very popular, especially with my existing clients. I’ve heard from one of my clients in Western Australia that he has just been through a TAC audit and they passed with flying colours. So far there hasn’t been an ASQA audit that I’m aware of.

Several of the new clients purchased just a couple of the units for BSB51915 – wanting to try them out before committing to any more. It’s great that they are now coming back and buying the balance of the qualification.

I’m still working on the resources for BSB42015 Certificate IV in leadership and management and some of my existing clients are buying them one by one as they are developed. The core are all completed now, and I’m up to the Risk Management unit in the electives.
Originally I was hoping to complete these by the end of June but it’s taking me longer than I expected. Even where the unit is stated as equivalent to the old FLM unit, there are many changes needed and for some units it’s been more efficient to do a complete re-write.

So for those of you who have resources from previous units that are stated as equivalent, I definitely recommend a complete validation and re-mapping. The performance criteria won’t give you any trouble but the knowledge evidence and performance evidence often requires additional or changed assessment tasks.

Also, now that foundation skills are mapped to the PCs you will have to see whether the tasks that you mapped to each PC addresses the specified foundation skills.

I’d like to say a special thank-you to Kevin who looks after my web site. Almost every week he needs to make changes to show what’s now developed. Since my phone number went to the top of the web page I’m getting all these calls from people who tell me they can do a better job and keep me at the top of the Google search engine. I just laugh.
