TAESS00006 Workplace Supervisor Skill Set

The target group for the TAESS00006 Workplace Supervisor Skill Set is supervisors and managers involved in developing the skills of their team. The descriptor states that these

competencies are identified as essential skills for those engaged in supervising apprentices.

There are 3 units in the Skill Set, as follows:

  • TAEASS301B Contribute to assessment
  • TAEDEL301A Provide work skill instruction  TAEDEL404A Mentor in the workplace

I received a call from two of my existing RTO clients in Western Australia who were asking specifically for Mentor in the Workplace – which is a unit I had not developed at that stage. Both calls came on the same day and both clients were responding to demand from the mining industry for the Skill Set.

In response to these requests I decided to go ahead and develop TAEDEL404A Mentor in the workplace. Once this was complete, I went back to look at the other two units, which I had already developed for other qualifications.

  • TAEASS301B Contribute to assessment was developed as part of BSB41412 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety
  • TAEDEL301A Provide work skill instruction was developed as par of TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

For TAEASS301B all of the learning and assessment materials were designed for the role of Work Health and Safety Coordinator and the TAEDEL301A materials were designed for people in a training role.

Originally I thought that I would get away with just “tweaking” these two units to focus on the role of Workplace Supervisor but in fact I ended up practically re-writing both of them from scratch. However, I am pleased with the result.

BSB40812 Certificate IV in Frontline Management

The same RTOs who wanted the Workplace Supervisor Skill Set also asked me to develop the unit BSBWOR401A Establish effective workplace relations. I understand that this unit is considered essential by the mining industry.

This is the unit I am currently developing. Now that I have analysed it in detail I can truly understand why this unit is considered so important. It focuses on the development of relationship management and communication skills.

Many (if not most) frontline managers are qualified tradespeople who are promoted into leadership positions. Suddenly they are required to manage their team and also establish and maintain relationships with management and external personnel – and they have had no training in how to do this.

I’ve always believed that problems in an organisation trickle from the top down – starting with the CEO. Problems with the workers on the front line are often the result of poor training and skills in middle management (the frontline managers). It’s noticeable that organisations where senior management is proactive in developing their frontline managers are more innovative and productive. That’s why I think the Certificate IV in Frontline Management is such an important qualification for the success of Australian enterprise.

So far I have developed the following units in BSB40812 Certificate IV in Frontline Management:

  • BSBMGT401A Show leadership in the workplace
  • BSBMGT402A Implement operational plan
  • BSBMGT403A Implement continuous improvement
  • BSBSUS301A Implement and monitor environmentally sustainable work practices
  • BSBWHS401A Implement and monitor WHS policies, procedures and programs to meet legislative requirements
  • BSBWOR402A Promote team effectiveness

I definitely plan to add to these, and am looking for suggestions on which units to prioritise.

Future Directions

Some of my clients are telling me they are not happy with the resources currently available for the new RII Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package. These clients are asking me whether I would be prepared to develop RII resources, and I’m thinking about it.

I have developed resources in the past for the old RII09 – for a specific client – so the requirements are familiar to me. Also, I have sufficient contacts in the industry that I can consult for technical expertise.

A lot will depend upon demand. If I receive sufficient enquiries I’ll go the next step.
